The 7th Annual Tłı̨chǫ Gathering was held July 5 to 7, 2011, in Whatì at the Johnny Nitsiza Cultural Centre. It also marked the 11th Session of the 2nd Tłı̨chǫ Assembly. Tłı̨chǫ citizens, leadership, Elders, and families came together to carry out governance work in a space grounded in culture, language, and community.
This gathering focused on sharing responsibility and maintaining direct accountability to the people. Assembly sessions created space for leadership reports, discussion, and collective direction. Social and cultural activities ran alongside formal governance, reinforcing that decision-making does not stand apart from daily life. You see governance practiced through relationships, not just procedures.
Holding the gathering in Whatì strengthened connection to place and history. The Johnny Nitsiza Cultural Centre provided a setting where Elders’ teachings, family presence, and youth participation shaped the tone of the Assembly. Time on the water and on the land reminded participants that Tłı̨chǫ governance flows from lived experience and shared knowledge.
The 7th Annual Tłı̨chǫ Gathering reflected unity across generations. It affirmed that leadership answers to the people and that citizens have a clear voice in shaping decisions. These gatherings continue to show how Tłı̨chǫ self-government is practiced through coming together, listening carefully, and moving forward as one people.
