Timeline

August 4, 2005 marked the official effective date of the Tłı̨chǫ Government.

On this day, the Tłı̨chǫ Agreement came into force, formally establishing a new era of Tłı̨chǫ self-government grounded in our laws, language, and responsibility to the land.

The day began in Behchokǫ̀ with the swearing-in of Tłı̨chǫ Community Government Members. Leaders gathered with Elders, drummers, youth, and citizens to witness this historic transition. The official closing of the Dogrib Treaty 11 Council’s 14th Annual Gathering marked the end of one governance structure and the beginning of another shaped by the Tłı̨chǫ Agreement.

In the afternoon, members of the Tłı̨chǫ Assembly were sworn in. The Tłı̨chǫ Constitution and the Tłı̨chǫ Land Claims and Self-Government Agreement took effect, confirming Tłı̨chǫ authority over lands, resources, culture, language, and governance within Mǫwhì Gogha Dè Nı̨ı̨tłèè.

Community members from Behchokǫ̀, Whatì, Gamètì, and Wekweètì gathered for ceremony, prayer, and celebration. The raising of the Tłı̨chǫ flag and the recognition of leadership symbolized the strength of Tłı̨chǫ unity and the collective work that led to this moment.

The effective date reflects decades of negotiation, leadership, and direction from Elders. It affirms Tłı̨chǫ jurisdiction and the ongoing responsibility to govern in a way that protects our lands, supports our people, and strengthens our Nation for future generations.

This page highlights that important transition and the beginning of the Tłı̨chǫ Government as it stands today.
